“Trina?!” Raeg called out again. “Wake up!”

“If she’s sleeping,” Max said. “You should let her sleep. Whatever they did to her, I doubt it was pleasant.”

Raeg grumbled angrily at first but then finally grunted in assent.

“I hope she’s alright,” Sophie said. “I’d hoped to talk to her more. We’re almost the same age.”

“You were talking to Trina?” Max asked.

“Yeah… before they took her,” Sophie replied, her voice lowering. “She’s a doctor here!”

“Yep,” Max said. “Things are definitely different from Earth. Everyone has a class, like in video games. You might have a little screen on or near your right arm somewhere.”

“Yes!” Sophie said. “I do have that. Trina said that’s for your job class.”

“Right,” Max replied. “Most people don’t get to pick a class, they-”

“Oh, I do!” Sophie said. “Trina said she thinks I’m a light warrior, but my class is still empty. I guess I can pick one.”

“You don’t say,” Max noted. That was interesting. So this girl was abducted because of that amulet Garem had, but she’d ended up becoming a light warrior, anyway. He shook his head. This place, sometimes it didn’t make sense in the slightest.

What worried him were Raeg and Trina. Raeg was not in good shape, and he did not know what had happened to Trina. He couldn’t even bring up his damned status screen to see for himself. He needed to get them out of here. If only he could see. Oh well, maybe that part would resolve itself. He ought to get moving.

The first thing he did was open his jaw bone and shove his right index finger deep into the big hole at the bottom of his skull. He felt along the back of the bone, looking for… there it was, the place where he’d used some goo he’d found stuck to his boot to stick a tiny item to the bone. With a flick of his finger, it came free but it didn’t pop right out. Max had to shake his skull around for a bit until the little bone cattan dropped free and clattered against his ribs before landing on the floor somewhere. Max couldn’t see it, but he found it pretty quickly.

“What’re you doin’ over there?” Raeg asked. “Playin’ dice?”

“Nope,” Max replied as he dropped the cattan to the floor. A pulse of black smoke filled his cell, providing a few moments of sweet relief from the constant bright light. When the smoke dissipated and the light returned Max could only barely see the form before him, just enough to pat the creature.

“Hey Opal,” he said, giving the mimic a good scratch along the top of her head, which was currently shaped like a metal-bound treasure chest. “Would you be so kind as to give me back my things?”

A loud series of thumps, clangs, and clinks followed as a sword, a full suit of armor, and multiple potions hit the floor.

“Good girl,” Max said as he grabbed one of Trina’s new and improved health potions and splashed it against the back of his neck bones.
